Professor Hara Teruyuki Retires (March 2006)
Prof. Hara
Teruyuki |
In March/April 2006, Professor Hara, renowned for his monumental monograph on Japan's intervention in Siberia during 1917-1922 (published in 1989), retired from Hokkaido University and started to teach at Hokkaido Information University. He worked at the SRC from 1987 to 2006, and served as SRC director in 1989-1992 and as university library director in 1997-2001. Professor Hara thought it necessary to place the history of Siberia and the Russian Far East in the context of Northeast Asian history and initiated a methodological innovation that would later be named "trans-border history." This approach found successors among young Japanese and Asian historians.
On March 17-19, 2006 the SRC held an international symposium focusing on the history of the Russian Far East and North East Asia to commemorate Professor Hara's contributions to the SRC and Hokkaido University. For this event, the SRC invited scholars from Krasnoiarsk, Vladivostok, and Tiraspol. At the end of the symposium, Professor Hara gave his final lecture titled "the History of Modern Asian Seas Viewed from Northeast."
