Professor David Wolff Succeeds Professor
Hara’s Deeds
David Wolff |
Selecting a successor to an excellent scholar is always difficult. This time David Wolff, famous for his monograph on Harbin history (1999) and for leadership in the Cold War International History Project (1991-), was chosen. Besides the breadth of his scholarly interest, covering from beans in Manchuria to KGB archives in Lithuania, one reason for SRC’s selection was that he has tirelessly demonstrated the merits of the trans-border approach to history and in this sense he is a legitimate successor to Professor Hara.
In the eight months since joining the SRC, Professor Wolff has achieved much for his new workplace; he is editing the coming issue of Acta Slavica Iaponica, coordinated SRC’s joint symposiums with the Kennan Institute and the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, held respectively on November 15 and 20. Another of Professor Wolff’s important fields of work is to build a new center for Cold War study in Japan. As a whole, his participation in the SRC will globalize it even further.
