中央ユーラシア研究は世界的にも若い分野であるため、多様なテーマで専門的な研究を進めて全体の水準を向上さ せることが急務となっている。その見地から、 私はこれまで以下の4種類のテーマに取り組んできた。

1. 近代カザフ知識人の世界観と政治活動。カザフスタンを遊牧文明、イスラーム文明、ヨーロッパ文明の交わ りの場と見る文明史的アプローチ、知識人の運動をロシア帝国の構造と民族国家形成の文脈で分析する政治史的アプローチ、知識人の民族観・民衆観やロシア人 と中央アジア人の相互認識に関する言説分析的アプローチという3つの視角から、研究を行ってきた。


2. 中央ユーラシアにおける民族史叙述の変遷。これまでにカザフ、タタール、バシキール、チュヴァシの各民 族について前近代の歴史叙述、近代知識人の歴史認識、ソ連時代の民族史研究、ソ連崩壊後の民族史叙述を調査した。これは、近年盛んな国民史の見直しである と同時に、（旧）ソ連の民族問題と民族政策を側面から照射する意義も持った。


3. 中央アジア諸国の政治体制。ホアン・リンスらの権威主義体制論を援用しながら、ソ連崩壊後のこれらの国 における権威主義体制強化の過程を分析した。


4. 中央ユーラシアの国際関係とそこにおけるイスラーム・ファクター。大国間の「新グレート・ゲーム」とい う見方を批判し、主権国家としての中央アジア諸国をプレーヤーとする国際関係（日本との関係を含む）の分析と、中央アジア政治の文脈でのイスラーム運動の 発生と過激化の研究を行った。

以上に加えて、最近では1.から派生するテーマとして、カザフ知識人の思想と活動の枠組みを（直接的にも反面 教師としても）作り出したロシア帝国の中央ア ジア政策の見直しに取り組んでいる。2002〜2003年の在外研究（ロシア、カザフスタン）では、特に兵役問題や宗教といったこれまで十分研究されてい ない側面から帝政ロシアの政策を解明すべく、文書館で史料収集を行った。 　

また、中央ユーラシア研究の基礎固めのため、概説書や事典等の執筆・編集にも力を入れている。 　

共同研究の面では、中央ユーラシア研究の中だけでなく、旧ソ連研究とイスラーム地域研究の双方で多くの研究者 と協力し、1996年以降11件の国内外の共 同研究プロジェクトに参加した。また国際協力事業団、外務省、日本国際問題研究所、国際交流基金などを通じた活動によって、いわゆる「社会貢献」も志して きた。 　

中央ユーラシア研究の発展、特に若手の専門研究者の育成は、純学問的にも社会的にも要請の大きい仕事である。 この目的のために、本プログラムを有効に活用 したいと考えている。
