*Update July 8
The first international symposium for the scientific project "Comparative Research on Major Regional Powers in Eurasia,"* will be held at the Slavic Research Center, Hokkaido University, on July 9-10 this year. The title of the symposium is "Elusive Balance: Regional Powers and the Search for Sustainable Development", in which we will discuss the role of regional powers including Russia, China, and India in the world economic and social order and inquire whether they can maintain their status as “powers” in the future world. More precisely we will discuss these problems focusing on the topics of the macro economy, the environment (anti-global warming), energy security, and social disparity. By doing so, it is expected that we can clarify the common difficulties and specific tasks of each country concerning these four topics. Besides, we are planning an exciting session on the border problems of Eurasia. We also expect in the course of the discussions to find some clues to solving these challenges in the worldwide context. The symposium concludes with a special session from historical perspectives.
