¡ÈUnknown Tales of the Southern Borders: the Yaeyama Islands and Taiwan¡É DVD completed
2011/10/25
The third part of the ongoing media collaboration between our Global COE Program and HBC Flex has been released. This release focuses on the extensive long-standing connections between the Islands of Ishigaki and Yonaguni with Taiwan, and follows our two previous projects on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands in the North and Tsushima in the West. It was wonderful to hear directly from those who lived lives that crossed national borders, those who made light of the border¡Çs existence and looked to their own struggles.
*Information on the ¡ÈUnknown Tales of an Island Border: Tsushima¡É DVD is here.
This DVD, as with the first two, will be released as a 40 minute English-language version in order to explain the long-standing relations between the Yaeyama¡Çs and Taiwan to a global audience. The generosity of HBC Flex has also allowed for the release of a 60-minute Director¡Çs Cut Japanese version. We would like to take the opportunity to offer our deepest thanks to all those who appeared in and co-operated with this production.
We are seeking to provide everyone with opportunities to view these DVDs by distributing them to libraries and universities. Additionally, if any film societies are interested in showing the DVD, we would be happy to co-operate, so please contact the Global COE program.
