Director Iwashita's commentary on the relocation of Futenma base in Okinawa was published on the May 20, 2010 Mainichi Daily News.
Prof. Iwashita argues that the relocation issue, a taboo in Japanese politics, was finally exposed with the new Democratic Party in Japan, and that the criticisms against Prime Minister Hatoyama has less to do with the prime minister's "irresponsibility" but more to do with the general public's reluctance to move the bases to the mainland. However, people's apathy toward the bilateral alliance and Okinawa's burden undermines Japan's post-war peace.
